Representatives of the University of Mostar met with representatives of the University of Sarajevo and its University Tele-Informatics Center (UTIC) to continue discussions on the establishment of GÉANT Forum BiH, an initiative supported by the Rectors' Council/Rectors' Conference of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
After the joint work on drafting the Statute, its harmonization among the partners is underway. Upon completion of that process, the association will be registered, which should acquire the status of a national academic and research network - NREN of Bosnia and Herzegovina - and become a full member of the GÉANT Association. GÉANT Forum BiH is open to all universities in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The meeting was attended by prof. dr. Tarik Zaimović, rector of the University of Sarajevo, prof. dr. Kemal Durić, vice-rector for international cooperation of the University of Sarajevo, prof. dr. Benina Veledar, vice-rector for finance of the University of Sarajevo, prof. dr. sc. Zenan Šabanac, director of the University Tele-Informatics Center - UTIC, prof. dr. sc. Tomislav Volarić, Vice-Rector for Digitalization and Technology Transfer of the University of Mostar and Head of the Center for Information Technologies – SUMIT and Hrvoje Puljiz, Director of the Croatian Academic and Research Network – CARNET.
We would like to express our special gratitude to CARNET and its Director Hrvoje Puljiz for their many years of assistance to Bosnia and Herzegovina on its European path and for their continuous support in connecting the academic and research community of BiH with the European infrastructure and relevant international associations.
The meeting highlighted the joint work towards establishing a sustainable, inclusive and internationally recognized NREN of Bosnia and Herzegovina. GÉANT currently connects more than 50 million users, and the current European project is worth 115 million euros. Membership of Bosnia and Herzegovina does not only mean connecting to a faster network, but also access to European infrastructure, digital identity, cybersecurity, joint projects and funding. Therefore, the establishment of the GÉANT Forum BiH is the first step towards creating a functional national academic and research network.
